Your SAT score is two section scores added together. Enter your Reading and Writing and Math scores to see your total out of 1600, or enter one section and a target to see what the other section needs to be.
How the SAT total is calculated
SAT total = Reading and Writing score + Math score
Each section is scored from 200 to 800, so the total runs from 400 to 1600. Example: 650 in Reading and Writing and 700 in Math make 1350. To reach a 1400 with a 650 in Reading and Writing, you need 1400 − 650 = 750 in Math.
The digital SAT format
The SAT is taken on a computer and is adaptive by section. You complete two modules in each section, and how well you do on the first module sets the difficulty of the second.
| Section | Modules | Questions | Time | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 2 | 54 (27 per module) | 64 minutes | 200–800 |
| Math | 2 | 44 (22 per module) | 70 minutes | 200–800 |
| Total | 4 | 98 | 134 minutes | 400–1600 |
Why there is no raw score table for the digital SAT
Older paper tests converted your number of correct answers to a score with a fixed table. The digital SAT does not work that way. Because the second module is easier or harder depending on the first, two students with the same number of correct answers can get different scores. Any tool that claims to turn right answers into an exact SAT score is estimating. The reliable calculation is the one above, adding two real section scores.
Wrong answers do not lose points
There is no penalty for a wrong answer on the SAT, so answer every question. A blank earns nothing, and a guess has a chance to earn credit.
Superscoring
Many colleges superscore, which means they take your highest Reading and Writing score and your highest Math score across all test dates and add them. Example: 680 and 650 on one date, then 640 and 700 on another, gives a superscore of 680 + 700 = 1380. Check each college’s policy, because some use your best single sitting instead.
Setting a target score
Start with the score a college lists for admitted students, then split it across sections. A 1400 can be 700 and 700, or 650 and 750. Because Math and Reading and Writing do not improve at the same speed for everyone, the calculator above lets you test different splits. Practice tests from the test maker are the best way to find your current section scores.
SAT score versus your class grade
The SAT is a separate exam, not part of your class gradebook. Your classes feed your GPA, which colleges read alongside the SAT. See how to calculate your GPA and the letter grade scale.
Frequently asked questions
How is the SAT scored out of 1600?
Your Reading and Writing score and your Math score each run from 200 to 800. They are added together for a total from 400 to 1600.
Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the SAT?
No. A wrong answer scores the same as a blank, so it is better to guess than to leave a question empty.
How many questions are on the digital SAT?
There are 98 scored questions in total: 54 in Reading and Writing and 44 in Math, split into two modules per section.
What is an SAT superscore?
A superscore combines your best Reading and Writing score and your best Math score from different test dates. Not every college uses it.
